ECHO Care of the Elderly aims to build a virtual community of practice helping primary care providers expand their skills and build their capacity in the care of frail, complex aging individuals. As clinicians and community-based individuals, we encounter problematic substance use as well as Substance Use Disorder among older adults in our daily work.  Canadian healthcare providers now have the tools they need to better support the prevention, assessment and treatment of older adults at risk of, or living with, substance use disorders.

The Canadian Coalition for Seniors’ Mental Health (CCSMH) officially launched 4 sets of Clinical Guidelines on Substance Use Disorders in Older Adults on January 20th, 2020.  These Clinical Guidelines on the prevention, screening, assessment and treatment of Alcohol, Cannabis, Benzodiazepine and Opioid Use Disorders among older adults are available online at www.ccsmh.ca.  In addition to these Guidelines, the CCSMH will be producing community brochures and other knowledge translation material on substance use disorder among older adults in the coming months.

Friday November 29, 2019 from 8:30am - 3:30pm at Dog House Studios, Napanee. This conference features presenters, Dr. Jonathan Bertram, Jennifer Stratford, Darcy King McKay, Mike Barnes, Sgt. Brad Milburn and Eman Attallah. Topics discussed include anti-psychotics versus cannabis in the elderly, sexual intimacy, safety in community and listening as a caregiver to the stories of dementia. Sept. 10, 2019 from 12-1PM EST join presenter Dr. Joanne Ho on the topic of safe prescribing in older adults.  Learning objectives of this session include: to understand some of the barriers to deprescribing, a practical approach to deprescribing, tools available to assist in deprescribing, and an opportunity to work through a deprescribing case. Baycrest, in partnership with North East Specialized Geriatric Centre, is recruiting for the Fall 2019 program of "Project ECHO Care of the Elderly Long-Term Care (ECHO COE LTC), a telehealth education program that aims to help primary care providers build capacity in the care of older adults through weekly 60-minute videoconference sessions. The sessions will run weekly from September 10 - December 3, 2019 on Tuesdays from 11am -12pm with the exception of October 1st, 2019. See the pdf flyers for more information.
